Amelia sighed, looking down at the ground where she was sitting. There was still a brace from when she'd injured her arm but it was no longer serious.

Kovu had been traveling for a while now without encountering anyone since that strange bird-man, Benjamin. He had made it to the Western Kingdoms by sneaking aboard a supplies ship and he now found himself in a place called the Badlands. He kind of liked the sound of it.
Kovu had been wandering the forest for about an hour now, and although he usually enjoyed solitude he was starting to feel a tad lonely. The trees were silent and even the birds weren't singing, quieted by the presence of a predator. His ears perked when the sound of a sigh whispered through the trees. Slowing, Kovu peered around a tree and discovered a cat-like woman sitting staring at the ground. Her eyes seemed out of focus, like she was lost in the past. Curious, he took a step closer, cursing when a twig snapped beneath his paw.

Amelia's eyes snapped up, lips curling back to show her sharper than normal teeth. Her arms tensed and she hissed as a twinge of pain shot through her injured arm. "Who's there?" She growled.

"Feisty," Kovu teased, stepping out from behind the tree. Now that he was closer to her, Kovu saw that the woman was wounded, wearing a brace on her arm. Kovu sat down a few feet away from her, hoping to show he wasn't a threat. He honestly wanted someone to talk to. "I'm Kovu."

Amelia eyed him suspiciously for a moment, before untensing slightly. "Amelia."

Kovu was glad to see her relaxing a little, even though he still felt kind of stiff and awkward after being alone for so long. Also, it felt weird that she was acting so normal about talking to a lion. "So what brings you to these parts?" Kovu inquired, trying to make conversation. He was more curious about her cat-like appearance and other oddities, but didn't want to be too forward.

"I needed some more distance from some of the unpleasantness of my past." She didn't find it strange to talk to a lion, probably because of how much time she spent as one herself.

Kovu's eyebrows furrowed. "I understand," he said, not pushing the subject. Kovu felt strangely drawn to Amelia, comfortable in her presence. He decided to lie down. A yawn escaped him and he realized he hadn't slept in three days.

Amelia tilted her head slightly at the other lion as he settled into a relaxed position.

"You seem oddly comfortable around talking lions," Kovu said after a little while, unable to check his curiosity any longer. A tinge of bitterness crept into his voice when he addressed himself as a talking lion. He didn't think of it as a good thing when in all honestly he longed to be human again.

"Well, that would be because I'm a lion shifter. You're not exactly something strange to me." She raised an eyebrow at him.

Kovu stood up quickly. "You're a lion shifter," he inquired warily. "I'm not overly fond of shifters," he said broodily, Belle's face swimming in his mind's eye. He knew shifters had nothing to do with what had happened to him, but he couldn't help but feel jealous of their ability to slip so easily between forms when he was stuck always as a monster. He walked away from Amelia, sitting down again near a tiny pond and glaring at his reflection. "It's stupid, really," he muttered half to himself.

Amelia narrowed her eyes slightly. "You're one to talk; you're not exactly a normal lion yourself."

Kovu rolled his eyes, slightly annoyed. "So ya, I can talk. Big deal. I didn't mean to offend you. It's not even shifters themselves I'm really mad at, but it's...," Kovu drifted off, already feeling like he was talking too much about himself. Was he really that desperate for conversation?

Amelia relaxed her expression somewhat. "I can understand. It's not just that though. There's a human-ness inside you I can sense, like you just haven't unlocked it."
