Joseph wondered what other people called her, but he guessed it wasn't anything pleasurable. Joseph knew first hand the cruelty of humans, but he didn't have revenge set in his mind. He wanted to hate them, all of them, but he couldn't. He found himself helping people, and he didn't know why most of the time. He hated being used, but it seemed he couldn't escape his fate. Ansinka was different though, he didn't feel like helping her was a burden. Then again, it seemed that way a lot of times. He was aware she could have just been lying, but he believed her, he just didn't think that way about people. "Ah', the queen, she seems to come up a lot in conversation. I think people expect me to help take her down, but to be honest, even though she burned down my home, I have no revenge after her." He confessed, no expression present on his face. "Maybe it's a curse, but I just don't feel angry that she did it. Anyway, have you learned anything so far?"

Asinka listened to him speak, concerned. Unable to feel anger? But that was part of being alive! It wasn't a pleasant emotion, true, but it was a natural response to something bad. Perhaps he was cursed. She wondered if she should take him to her father, see if he could be helped in that area. But she'd been told not to return until she was ready, and there was no telling when that would be. "The queen has wronged many people. I suppose others are angry enough for you." she shrugged. "I've learned many things about other peoples besides my own, but I'm afraid they're not what my father wants me to learn. I keep wondering if I'm supposed to have some sort of world-shattering epiphany about life that'll serve me well when I take over for father, but I fear it may be a long time coming." Asinka sighed, weighed down by her self doubt.

Joseph looked up, feeling a small raindrop land on his shoulder. He chose to ignore it for a bit. "Well, I guess that's true. I wouldn't worry too much about what to learn though. I think, when you learn it, you'll just know." He assured her. He flinched a bit when another raindrop landed on him. He paused, "Perhaps we should seek shelter." He pointed to the forest nearby, as they had already passed many of the inns.

"I suppose you're right." Asinka agreed glumly. A raindrop hit her nose, and her ear, and both twitched at the uncomfortable sensation. The storm was coming in fast. She looked to the forest he pointed at, which seemed dense enough to block out most of the coming rainfall. There would undoubtedly be plenty of animals in there, so dinner wouldn't be a problem. Finding adequate shelter was a different thing altogether. As she pulled up her hood again, she said with a grin, "We should hurry, or I'll smell like a wet dog."

Joseph nodded, walking off the path and heading for the tree line. He felt safer somehow when he entered the forest. He touched one of the trees and took a deep breath, feeling refreshed. He let the breath out and looked to Asinka. "So, everyone I've met seems against the queen. How is it she has so many followers? Do they hide it? Or do they just never venture into the western kingdom?" He asked, leaning against the tree.

"Oh, most don't hide it."" Asinka said, hoisting herself onto a tree branch to rest on. Her tail draped over the side, wagging slightly. The canopy of the forest was keeping them dry for the most part. "She actually has a rather large army, and a few magic users. Don't ask me why any of them follow her. There's really no telling." She shrugged, looking down at him. "I suppose you've been lucky to not have met any of them. They're persistent in their chases, I'll give 'em that."

Joseph shrugged, "Maybe they have their own justice to follow. I guess if I had a faster horse and business in her kingdom, I might not even roam in the western kingdom anymore. I'm really on nobody's side. I think if I had to, I would help take her down, but only if I had to." He confessed, looking up to her. He found it rather endearing that she acted like a dog. He looked back to the dirt and took some in his hand, rubbing it between his fingers. "Have you ever heard the story of the giving tree?" He asked all of a sudden, smiling a bit.

Asinka watched him mess with the dirt, nose twitching curiously. She shook her head at his question, grimacing. "I'm afraid not." she answered, "I haven't heard much of folklore outside of my village, and I've been too focused on other things to learn." A shame, really. There had to be so many interesting tales and lessons she could take back home to impress her father with. Her mother would like them too, she bet.

Joseph picked up a stick after dropping the dirt and dusting his hands off. He started making circles in the earth with it. "Legend has it that there was a tree who fell in love with a little boy. He would swing on her branches, eat her apples, and use her leaves for shading. The tree had much enjoyment in giving the boy everything he needed. But as you know, humans don't stay young forever. As the boy grew, he started coming less and less. One day, the boy came as a young man, explaining that he needed money. She said she didn't have any, but he could take her leaves and apples and sell them in town for money. He did just that and didn't come again for awhile. The next time, he was a man. He explained he was tired and bored and needed to get away from that place. She told him he could cut her branches and make a boat and sail away...." Joseph's grip of the stick loosened and it fell from his hand. He stared at his extended hand. "He came back, telling her he had found a wife and he needed to build a house for his family. The tree said she would give him her trunk. He chopped down the trunk and vanished again. He came back as an old man and was tired, so he just set on her stump..." He explained.
Joseph rose to his feet and spun around a bit, as if he were dancing, a faint smile on his face. "Truth is, he took her leaves, apples, branches. She went looking for him, becoming her human like form, for she was enchanted. She found him and he didn't recognize her, but seduced her none the less. She didn't know any better and he slept with her. Guess that's where I came in... When she became a tree again, she gave even me away, but the boy didn't want me. Funny, isn't it? He took everything else, but he just left me." Joseph chuckled lightly, then stopped walking, putting his hand on a tree.

Asinka listened attentively to the story, watching Joseph's movements with the stick. It was such a sad story. If she had been in the tree's place, she would've eaten the greedy man. Or at the very least maimed him. She snapped back to attention when he started spinning, ears flattening against her head. The second version was sadder than the first, even if the tree survived. She pursed her lips, thinking.
"If you ask me, it's his loss." She said firmly, "Anyone should be honored to have you as pack." To illustrate her point, she hopped down and stalked up to him. She licked his cheeks and forehead, and proclaimed solemnly, "I claim you. We are pack."

Joseph wondered why it was so easy to talk to her, but he remembered when he was a kid. He used to talk all the time to the young wolves his village took in, so maybe that was she was just so easy to share with? He didn't know, but he swallowed when she got down. He smirked, as if she was only patronizing him. He was stunned when she licked his cheek, blushing a bit and standing still. He touched his cheek for a moment, still speechless, then he shook his head. He put his hand on her cheek. "That's sweet, t'ankší (Younger sister), but we barely know each other." He walked passed her, his hand dropping to his side. "You never know, I might be the worst man in the world. It's better if I'm alone, not belonging to anyone's pack." He admitted, smiling a bit.

Asinka watched his walk away, ears drooping. Then she grinned cheekily, and teased, "And I might be an evil spirit waiting to gobble you up. You never know." She put her hands on her hips and added, "It still stands, though, evil stranger or not." Pack was pack, her father had taught her. That was why he protected the village, why she would someday have to even though she had been nothing but feared and shunned. "It's not like I'm asking to be your mate or anything. I'll just help you if you need me to someday." she explained.

Joseph smiled a bit, looking behind him to notice her cheeky grin. "Well I'm vulnerable now if you're hungry." He teased, then shook his head and closed his eyes again. He reflected on the weather around them, finding that it was quite relaxing in the sheltered rain. His eyes opened when she mentioned she would help him out. "Oh? And what's so bad about being my mate? That's a bit of a low blow, don't you think?" He grinned, opening his eyes a bit.

Asinka laughed, scratching one ear. "Not much would be bad. Couldn't be worse than an arranged marriage." Her father had been considering matches before she'd left. Perhaps he'd have one picked out when she returned. Shaking her head clear of those thoughts, she smiled and said, "Besides, you wouldn't want to be a cradle robber, would you? I'm not even a full grown woman yet. Well...physically anyways."

Joseph pushed himself off the tree trunk, "Cradle robber? Hey!" He laughed a bit, although he found it hurtful to suggest such a thing in the manner she did. "Age is just a number, right? My mother was quite old when my father took her." He admitted, then shook his head. "Don't worry though, I don't intend on being used. That's all a normal relationship is, right?" He frowned a bit and looked up, noticing that the rain was subsiding.
